Focus on Quality:
Donor Screening and Eligibility
LifeNet Health receives donors from federally designated Organ Procurement Organizations and qualified tissue recovery programs. Our clinical staff trains our tissue recovery partners on proper donor screening and on recovery procedures to enhance tissue safety. In addition, LifeNet Health’s recovery partners are audited to guarantee that their tissue recovery processes meet current Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) standards, and strict guidelines set in place by LifeNet Health.
All donors undergo a rigorous screening process that includes a medical history and behavioral risk assessment that mirrors the requirements set forth by the AATB and the FDA. Specially trained professionals review the medical and behavioral findings to ensure medical suitability of the donor. When autopsies are performed, the results are made part of the donor record and are evaluated when determining whether the donor tissue is suitable for transplantation.
All recovered tissue is sampled for microbiological contamination at the time of recovery or, in the case of cardiovascular tissue, culture samples are obtained prior to processing. Standard microbiological methods utilizing aerobic and anaerobic media are employed to culture and identify bacteria and fungi.
LifeNet Health engages in these and other practices because our primary concern during any tissue recovery is to prevent contamination and honor the family’s wishes for donation while respecting the donor’s dignity.
