5 Facts About The Process of Tissue Donation

1. Tissue donations can enhance the lives of as many as 75 others.

2. A donor referral can be received from a hospital, medical examiner, funeral home and in some cases, law enforcement authorities.

3. Tissue banks, organizations that perform donor screening and test functions as well as storage facilities for human cell, tissue and cellular-and-tissue based products must be registered with the FDA.

4. All relevant medical records must be obtained and forwarded to the processors who receive tissues.

5. The American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) requires accredited tissue banks to provide follow-up services to donor families.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of individuals who experience serious illness and injury are returned to healthy productive lives through the transplantation of donated organs and tissue. The Process of Tissue Donation is a 2-credit Continuing Education program that will introduce you to the steps in the donation and recovery process, including donor eligibility and authorization. For more information or to schedule a program at your facility, contact your LifeNet Health Bio-Implant Specialist.
