Michelle Pickens Golf Tournament Reaches Half Million Dollar Mark
TMichelle Pickens would have been 28 years old now. Her mother Barbara can't believe it's been 14 years since Michelle passed away tragically and unexpectedly of a brain aneurysm. One of the last memories Barbara has of her 14-year old daughter is a wonderful outing in which the family learned to play golf. "Michelle was so excited for me," says Barbara. "I got a hole in one on my second time out!"
With that fond memory in mind, Barbara and Ron Pickens decided to honor their daughter's life by hosting a golf tournament to raise funds for the LifeNet Health Foundation. That was in 1997. Now, 14 years later, the Michelle Pickens Memorial Golf Tournament has netted more than $500,000. With 300 participants covering two golf courses, the 14th annual tournament held in June raised $62,000, enabling the event to surpass its goal of half a million dollars to date.
Event co-chairs Barbara Pickens and Tim McCartney present a check for $62,000 to Rony Thomas, president and CEO of LifeNet Health.
"I think she would be proud of what we're doing with the golf tournament," says Barbara. "Michelle was just one of those kids who wanted to help others and she would be glad that we made the right decision to donate her organs so that she can live on in others."
The funds raised at the Michelle Pickens Memorial Golf Tournament help bereaved donor families through the Donor Family Services division of LifeNet Health. For more information, visit http://www.healingthespirit.org/
