Roberto Bracone Scores for Organ Donation at "Recycle Yourself" Tennis Tournament
Congratulations to LifeNet Health's Roberto Bracone, Product Manager, Orthopedics, on making a win for organ and tissue donation at the 3rd Annual "Recycle Yourself" Tennis Tournament held in Virginia Beach, VA in May.
Four years ago, LifeNet Health volunteer, Brenda West, had an idea to honor her dad and help raise awareness about organ and tissue donation. Brenda's dad, Linwood Strickland, received a heart transplant at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in 1991. Linwood passed away a few years ago, but Brenda was determined to honor him and his gracious donor through the "Recycle Yourself" Tennis Tournament.
1. Roberto Bracone takes the title but the honors go to all those who support organ and tissue donation!
For the past two years, the popular tennis community has hit the courts to support donation and this year was no exception. More than 60 players came together for a round robin style tennis tournament. The event yielded $3,156 which brings the total amount raised by the tournaments to $8,656.92! At the request of the family, all of the funds are being donated to the LifeNet Health Foundation for use by the Community Education Department.
"Brenda is one of those people who doesn't just talk about doing something to honor a loved one," says Nancy Hurst, Community Education Coordinator, LifeNet Health. "She actually stepped up to the plate and did something! She works very hard each year to raise awareness (and funds!) for organ donation and she's bringing her message to a whole new community of may not have made the decision to donate life."
Brenda is already planning for the next tournament, so get your racquets out and start practicing for the 2012 "Recycle Yourself" Tennis Tournament on May 5, 2012.
